Task Force Arrests Three Men Accused Of Killing A Beeville, Texas Police Officer

San Antonio – On May 18th, 2006, The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force led by the United States Marshals Service, in association with the San Antonio Police Department, arrested Marcus Anthony Acevedo, Jeremy Miera, and Vincent Jessamy for the May 7th murder of Beeville Police Officer Gregory Dean Stewart and the murder of Juan Cerda, a civilian.

The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force became involved after Officer Gregory Stewart passed away from complications caused by the gunshot wounds. The case had no promising leads until the United States Marshals Service called a press conference and offered a $5,000.00 reward for information leading to the arrest of the people involved in the slaying of both men. A viewer saw the news conference and felt they may possibly know the identity of the people who committed the murders. The viewer then called the Homicide Division of the San Antonio Police Department (S.A.P.D.) and the case moved rapidly at that point. Lone Star Fugitive Task Force Members worked continually for approximately 36 hours until all suspects were in custody. Presently the three suspects are only charged with the murder of Officer Stewart.

Both men were shot during a thirty minute crime spree by Acevedo, Jessamy and Miera. In addition to the two separate shootings the suspects also robbed a 15 year old female at gunpoint.

LaFayette Collins, United States Marshal for the Western District of Texas, stated, “The loss of two innocent men will be felt deeply by their respective communities and families. Gregory Stewart was a fine police officer, a respected member of the military, and a loving father who had just returned from a tour in Iraq. The three fugitives we arrested today will now face justice for their crimes.”

Res Ipsa Loquitur - Literally, "a thing that speaks for itself."
In tort law, the doctrine which holds a defendant guilty of negligence without an actual showing that he or she was negligent. Its use is limited in theory to cases in which the cause of the plaintiff's injury was entirely under the control of the defendant, and the injury presumably could have been caused only by negligence.
